Kumarakom, Kerala: The newly completed Konathattu Bridge on the Kottayam–Kumarakom road is set to improve road connectivity to Kumarakom and provide an important boost to the destination’s tourism sector. The bridge was constructed with an investment of ₹29.49 crore through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), including the cost of land acquisition for the approach roads (ManoramaOnline) 

The 107.1-metre-long and 13-metre-wide bridge replaces the earlier narrow crossing and forms part of improvements to the Kottayam–Kumarakom road. The structure includes three 12.5-metre land spans and a 26.5-metre central span. Approach roads measuring approximately 45 metres on the Kottayam side and 35 metres on the Kumarakom side have also been completed. 

The bridge was opened to traffic in late 2025 after construction delays, easing the severe congestion that had affected the Kottayam–Kumarakom–Cherthala route during construction. Completion of the bridge and approach roads has improved the movement of private vehicles, buses and other traffic travelling towards Kumarakom. 

The improved road connection is particularly significant for Kumarakom tourism, as thousands of visitors travel to the destination throughout the year for its Vembanad Lake backwaters, houseboat cruises, resorts and nature attractions. Easier access from Kottayam can make road journeys more convenient for tourists arriving from other parts of Kerala and neighbouring states. 

The new bridge is also expected to benefit residents and businesses by improving daily transportation and strengthening access between Kumarakom and Kottayam. Better road infrastructure can support the movement of tourism-related services, including taxis, buses and supplies serving hotels, resorts and other establishments. 

However, improved connectivity may also lead to increased traffic volumes, particularly on weekends, holidays, and peak tourism periods. Managing traffic around Kumarakom Junction and other busy sections of the route will therefore remain important as visitor numbers increase. 

The Konathattu Bridge represents an important addition to Kumarakom’s transport infrastructure. Along with the destination’s growing hospitality facilities and established backwater tourism attractions, better road connectivity could further strengthen Kumarakom’s position as one of Kerala’s leading tourism destinations.
