As the heavy rains that battered central Kerala begin to subside, the backwater town of Kumarakom is transitioning from relief to recovery. Floodwaters are slowly receding from several low-lying villages in the region, including Kummanam, Aymanam, Ezhumanthuruthu, Ayamkudy, and notably, Kumarakom . The focus is now shifting to the massive task of cleaning up the waterlogged areas and restoring normalcy for the affected residents. Relief Efforts Underway In a significant boost to recovery operations, Muthoot Finance has announced an emergency relief assistance of ₹25 lakh to support approximately 5,000 families affected by the heavy rains and flooding in the Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts . As part of the first phase of this corporate social responsibility initiative, 500 emergency relief kits were distributed across the severely affected areas of Kottayam district, including Kumarakom, Illikkal, Chengalam, Puthuppally and Changanassery . These relief kits, containing essential hygiene supplies and emergency groceries, are being provided to families staying in relief camps and temporary shelters, as well as those returning home from the camps . The distribution is being carried out in collaboration with district administrations and local self-governing bodies to ensure the aid reaches those who need it most . Infrastructure Shows Resilience Despite the challenging weather, early reports suggest that the recent floods may have caused less damage to crucial infrastructure than in previous years, largely due to proactive measures. In several low-lying areas, including Kumarakom, the Kerala State Electricity Board had relocated transformers to higher ground following the devastating 2018 floods . This precautionary step has limited the damage to the power grid, preventing widespread outages that often compound the misery of flood-affected communities . The swift mobilization of relief supplies, combined with the resilience of its infrastructure, is helping the community recover from this natural calamity.
