Kumarakom, Kerala: Kerala’s much-awaited Onam tourism season is set to begin with the state’s official Onam Tourism Week celebrations from August 24 to 30, 2026, creating fresh opportunities for destinations such as Kumarakom to attract domestic and international visitors. Kerala Tourism has confirmed the week-long celebrations as part of its tourism and cultural promotion programme. 

For Kumarakom, one of Kerala’s best-known backwater destinations on the shores of Vembanad Lake, the Onam period offers an opportunity to showcase the region’s traditional culture, backwater experiences and festive cuisine. The destination is particularly suited to travellers looking to combine the celebrations of Onam with a relaxed stay amid Kerala’s waterways and village landscapes. 

Onam is celebrated throughout Kerala and is closely associated with traditional food, cultural performances, floral decorations, music and other local customs. Thiruvonam, the principal day of Onam, falls on August 26, 2026, according to Kerala Tourism’s festival calendar. 

Kerala Tourism has indicated that this year’s tourism celebrations will give greater prominence to traditional art forms, particularly to showcase Kerala’s cultural diversity to visitors. The main official venue is in Thiruvananthapuram, but the wider festival period is expected to generate tourism activity across the state.

Kumarakom can benefit from this seasonal interest through its houseboat cruises, resorts, traditional Kerala cuisine and nature-based attractions. Visitors can combine an Onam holiday with a cruise through the Vembanad backwaters, a stay at a waterfront resort or a visit to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. 

The festival period is also expected to coincide with increased travel demand across Kerala. Indian Railways has announced 112 special trains for Kerala during the Onam season, although concerns have been raised about whether their schedules adequately match peak travel demand. 

With Onam approaching, Kumarakom is well positioned to welcome travellers seeking an authentic Kerala backwater experience during one of the state's most important cultural seasons.
