KUMARAKOM, KERALA: The monsoon season is keeping birdwatching in Kumarakom in focus, with the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary offering nature enthusiasts a different experience during the rainy months. While the sanctuary is widely associated with migratory birds that arrive during the winter, Kerala Tourism identifies June to August as an important period for observing resident birds.

Located on the banks of Vembanad Lake, the 14-acre Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary provides a wetland habitat of waterways, mangroves, coconut groves and lush vegetation. The monsoon replenishes the surrounding wetlands and creates favourable conditions for resident waterbirds and other species.

According to Kerala Tourism, visitors during June to August can observe birds including Indian darters, little cormorants, egrets, herons, ibises, kingfishers and other waterfowl. The season also coincides with the breeding period of several wetland bird species, making the rainy months particularly interesting for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

The sanctuary's location beside Vembanad Lake adds another dimension to the experience. Birdwatching can be combined with a boat trip through the surrounding backwaters, allowing visitors to observe birds and wetland landscapes from the waterways. The Kottayam district administration also lists June to August as the best period for local birdwatching, while November to February is considered the principal season for migratory birds.

The monsoon therefore offers an opportunity to position Kumarakom beyond its conventional peak-season tourism image. With fewer crowds and lush surroundings, birdwatching can become part of a wider rainy-season nature tourism experience that includes backwater cruises, village experiences and photography.

The key seasonal claim is supported directly by Kerala Tourism, which currently states that June–August is the best period for local birdwatching, while November–February is the migratory-bird season.

For travellers visiting Kumarakom in August, an early-morning visit to the bird sanctuary can be a rewarding addition to a monsoon itinerary. Visitors should carry rain protection and suitable footwear, while allowing sufficient time for quiet observation rather than expecting a conventional sightseeing experience.

As Kerala's monsoon landscape turns increasingly green, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary continues to demonstrate that the destination's appeal extends well beyond the winter migratory-bird season.
