Keralam’s ₹90,000-Crore Tourism Target Puts Kumarakom in Focus

Keralam’s ₹90,000-Crore Tourism Target Puts Kumarakom in Focus

KUMARAKOM, Kerala: Kumarakom could gain fresh opportunities as Kerala embarks on an ambitious plan to double tourism revenue over the next five years, with the government targeting around ₹90,000 crore in annual tourism earnings.

Tourism Minister P. C. Vishnunadh, speaking during the 13th Kerala Travel Mart in Kochi, said the state intends to increase tourism revenue from around ₹45,000 crore to ₹90,000 crore within five years. The strategy includes developing new destinations, improving infrastructure and encouraging greater investment in the tourism sector.

The government has also announced plans to develop 20 new tourism destinations within one year and 100 destinations over five years, with an emphasis on sustainable development and participation from local communities. Kumarakom is particularly relevant to this approach, as the state's Responsible Tourism initiative was pioneered in the destination and has helped connect tourism activity with local employment and livelihoods.

Sustainable growth planned for major destinations

Alongside the expansion strategy, the government plans to undertake carrying-capacity studies at major tourism destinations, including Munnar and Alappuzha. The objective is to understand how much visitor activity destinations can accommodate while protecting environmentally sensitive areas and avoiding excessive congestion.

The move could have particular significance for Kumarakom, where the tourism economy is closely linked to the Vembanad backwaters, houseboats, resorts, Ayurveda and wellness experiences, village tourism and nature-based activities.

Rather than focusing only on increasing visitor numbers, the emerging tourism strategy places greater emphasis on sustainability, destination infrastructure and community participation. Kerala's 2026 Development Report also highlights responsible tourism, destination diversification and stronger private-sector participation as important elements of the state's tourism development.

New investment opportunities for Kumarakom

The proposed expansion of tourism infrastructure and investment could create opportunities for Kumarakom's hospitality and experience-based tourism businesses. Houseboat operators, resorts, homestays, Ayurveda centres, local activity providers and community tourism initiatives could benefit from increased demand if the state's international and domestic tourism markets continue to expand.

The government is also preparing to extend industry benefits and single-window facilitation to tourism enterprises, with the Tourism Minister indicating that the initiative is under consideration across government departments. The proposal is part of the state's wider effort to make tourism investment and project approvals easier.

For Kumarakom, the combination of backwater tourism, responsible tourism, wellness, hospitality and community-led experiences provides a strong foundation for participating in this next phase of Keralam's tourism development.

As the state seeks to double tourism revenue, the focus is increasingly shifting from simply attracting more visitors to creating higher-value, sustainable and locally beneficial tourism experiences. Kumarakom's established position in responsible and backwater tourism could make it an important destination within this evolving tourism strategy.
