Cruise Tourism Expansion Gathers Momentum in Kerala

Kochi, September 2026: Kerala is preparing for a major expansion of its cruise and maritime tourism sector, with the state government planning new cruise infrastructure and wider connectivity across its coastline, rivers and backwaters.

The government has announced plans for cruise terminals in Kochi and Kozhikode, strengthening Kerala's position as a cruise tourism destination and creating opportunities for greater coastal connectivity. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan said the Kozhikode terminal would form part of a broader effort to develop the state's ports and make better use of its nearly 600-kilometre coastline.

The expansion is not limited to large coastal cruise ships. Kerala is also looking at using its extensive network of waterways for tourism. Plans call for the development of water tourism connecting the state's 44 rivers and backwaters, potentially bringing a much wider range of destinations into the cruise and water-tourism circuit.

Coastal cruise connectivity across Kerala

Another significant proposal is the development of coastal cruise connectivity between Kerala's northern and southern regions, including a route linking Kasaragod with Thiruvananthapuram. The initiative could provide a new tourism experience based on Kerala's coastline while connecting several port towns and tourist destinations.

The Kerala Maritime Board has already been working on plans for coastal cruise services linking the state's non-major ports with Kochi and, in later phases, ports in neighbouring maritime states. A 2025 board decision outlined a phased approach beginning with a service from a northern or southern Kerala port, followed by connections with Cochin Port and Vizhinjam, and eventually other states.

Building a wider maritime tourism network

The proposed expansion comes as Kochi continues to receive international cruise ships. The Cochin Port Authority reported the arrival of Europa 2 in February 2026, describing it as a revival of cruise business at the port.

The plans announced at Kerala Travel Mart 2026 therefore represent a broader vision: combining international cruise tourism with coastal cruises, river and backwater experiences and port-based tourism.

For Kerala's tourism industry, the proposed network could create opportunities for destinations that are currently outside the mainstream tourism circuit. Coastal towns, heritage sites, beaches, backwaters and inland destinations could potentially be connected through new water-based tourism products.

The cruise tourism expansion also fits into Kerala's wider strategy of using its coastline, ports, rivers and backwaters as tourism assets, while creating new opportunities for local businesses and communities.
