KOCHI, September 2026: Kerala is planning a major investment push to strengthen Muziris as a global heritage tourism destination, with a proposed investment of around ₹190 crore for tourism infrastructure, heritage conservation and visitor facilities.

The initiative is aimed at giving greater international visibility to the historic Muziris region while improving the experience for domestic and international visitors. The proposed development is expected to focus on the region's archaeological, cultural and maritime heritage and strengthen the connections between its various heritage attractions. Strengthening Muziris Heritage Tourism

Muziris, associated with Kerala's ancient maritime trade, is one of the state's most significant heritage tourism regions. The Muziris Heritage Project extends across parts of Ernakulam and Thrissur districts, including North Paravur, Chendamangalam and Kodungallur.

The project seeks to conserve and showcase monuments, archaeological sites, museums, religious heritage and other cultural assets associated with the historic port region. Kerala Tourism describes Muziris as a major heritage-conservation initiative involving multiple government departments and local communities.

The region's history is closely linked with centuries of maritime trade and cultural exchanges involving communities and traders from different parts of the world. Historic churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, forts, palaces and traditional settlements form part of the wider Muziris heritage landscape.

Heritage Sites and Visitor Amenities

The proposed investment is expected to improve tourist amenities, infrastructure and heritage-site facilities, making it easier for visitors to explore the region.

Muziris already has a network of museums and heritage attractions. Kerala Tourism says that more than 25 museums have been established as part of the heritage initiative, along with major infrastructure improvements and facilities designed to help visitors understand the history and cultural diversity of the region.

The development of better visitor facilities could also support longer stays and encourage tourists to explore several attractions rather than visiting individual sites as separate destinations.

Historic Tourism Circuit

One of the important aspects of the proposed development is the strengthening of Muziris as a connected heritage tourism circuit.

The region's waterways provide an opportunity to combine heritage sightseeing with cruises and other water-based experiences. Kerala Tourism's Muziris project already incorporates timeline tours, culture tours, museum tours and backwater cruises, creating opportunities to experience the region through different tourism products.

A stronger heritage circuit could connect museums, archaeological locations, religious monuments, waterfront areas and historic settlements, creating a more comprehensive tourism experience.

Focus on Sustainable Heritage Tourism

The development plans also come at a time when Kerala is placing greater emphasis on sustainable and experiential tourism.

The Muziris Heritage Project has adopted conservation and community participation as important components of its approach. Kerala Tourism says the project aims to preserve cultural assets, promote sustainable development and ensure accessibility while involving local communities in conservation and development activities.

Improved tourism infrastructure could therefore create opportunities for local businesses, guides, homestays, restaurants, handicrafts and other tourism-related enterprises in the Muziris region.

International Potential

The proposed investment comes as Kerala seeks to expand its heritage and experiential tourism offerings for international visitors.

Muziris has a particularly strong international tourism narrative because of its historic connections with maritime trade, spices, religions and cultural exchanges. The International Spice Routes Conference, organised by the Muziris Heritage Project in January 2026, brought together participants from 22 countries and explored the tourism potential of the historic Spice Routes.

The proposed ₹190-crore development could further strengthen this international positioning by combining heritage conservation with modern visitor infrastructure and tourism experiences.
