Heritage Boat Trip on Vembanad Lake
Roots and Roads is organising a boat trip on Saturday, September 19, introducing participants to the reclaimed paddy fields where farming takes place below water level. The trip will begin at 8:30 am from Kodimatha Jetty in Kottayam and return at 5:30 pm.
Combining recreation and learning, this safe boat journey offers an opportunity to discover the history and agricultural heritage of the reclaimed lake lands, observe everyday life in Kuttanad, explore tribal worship centres, lighthouses and historical monuments, and learn about the region’s biodiversity.
The journey will follow the Kodoor River, taking in the blooming water lilies at Malarikkal in Thiruvaikkari paddy fields, the Munro Lighthouse at Pazhukkanila, and the mouth of the Meenachil River. It will then cover the reclaimed paddy blocks designated C to T, the Perumparayan Memorial at Chathurthyakari, and Chithira Church, before returning along the Alappuzha–Kottayam boat route.
Participants will have opportunities to spot migratory birds, groups of otters and other aquatic animals, as well as the lake’s plant life. Historian Pallikonam Rajeev will provide commentary throughout the journey.
