Kochi: Kerala's historic Muziris heritage boating service is set for a major revival, with full-scale operations expected to resume next month after several years of inactivity. The initiative is aimed at strengthening heritage tourism and providing visitors with a unique way to explore the historic waterways connecting important Muziris attractions.

The revived service will operate with an eight-boat fleet comprising five 24-seater passenger boats, two air-conditioned water taxis and a high-speed boat. The boats are intended to serve different categories of visitors, from organised tourist groups and school excursions to smaller groups seeking premium water transport and recreational rides.

Heritage Attractions Connected by Water

The boating network will connect several important heritage attractions spread across Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. The proposed routes will provide access to destinations including Paravur, Cherai, Pallipuram, Azhikode, Kottappuram, Paliam and Chendamangalam.

Among the attractions that can be covered through the heritage circuit are Cherai Sahodaran Ayyappan Museum, Pallipuram Fort, Azhikode St Thomas Church, Kottappuram Waterfront, Kottappuram Fort, Paliam Palace, Paliam Nalukettu and Chendamangalam Synagogue. 

The revival is expected to make it easier for tourists to combine several heritage attractions into a single water-based travel experience.

Half-Day Packages Already Resumed

As preparations continue for the full-scale launch, half-day boating packages have already resumed from Kottappuram.

The three-hour tours are conducted in two sessions—9.30 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm—and currently cover attractions including Paliam Palace, Paliam Nalukettu and Kottappuram Fort.

The half-day package is priced at ₹399 per person, while a full-day package costs ₹22,000 per group. The services are operated using 24-passenger boats.

Four-Year Gap in Paravur Services

Boating from Paravur is also expected to resume after a gap of around four years, with another 24-seater vessel being deployed following extensive repairs.

The Muziris boating services had gradually become inactive because of technical problems, maintenance issues, changes to routes, water-level fluctuations and the closure or operational difficulties of certain boat jetties. Authorities have now undertaken repairs and improvements to restore the network. 

As part of the preparations, boat jetties have been upgraded, navigation signage improved and congested sections of waterways cleared, according to the latest report.

Water Taxis and Speedboats Add New Experiences

A key feature of the revived fleet will be the introduction of air-conditioned water taxis, aimed at smaller groups and visitors looking for faster and more comfortable transportation between heritage attractions.

The larger 24-seater boats will cater to tourist groups and educational excursions, while the high-speed boat will offer recreational experiences for domestic visitors and weekend travellers.

Boost for Muziris Heritage Tourism

The boating revival is expected to strengthen the Muziris Heritage Project, which seeks to showcase the historical and cultural legacy of the ancient port region.

Muziris is associated with a rich history of maritime trade and cultural exchange, and the heritage project encompasses historic monuments, museums, waterways and traditional communities around Kodungallur and North Paravur. Kerala's tourism statistics identify the Muziris region as an important heritage tourism area containing sites such as Paliam Palace, Kottappuram Fort and the Chendamangalam Synagogue.

The renewed boating network could also benefit local homestays, restaurants, traditional artisans and other tourism businesses by increasing visitor movement through the heritage villages and waterways.

A New Water-Based Heritage Experience

With the full fleet expected to become operational next month, the Muziris heritage boating revival could add a significant new dimension to Kerala's tourism offerings.

Rather than visiting individual monuments separately, tourists will be able to experience Kerala's history, waterways, architecture and local culture as part of an integrated heritage circuit by boat.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Muziris as a destination where heritage tourism and backwater tourism come together, giving visitors another reason to explore one of Kerala's most historically significant regions.
