KUMARAKOM: The Kumarakom Boat Club’s Muthuthayikkan emerged victorious in the prestigious Sree Narayana Jayanthi Ever-Rolling Trophy at the 123rd Sree Narayana Jayanthi Water Festival held at Kottathodu, Kumarakom, on August 28.

Muthuthayikkan, captained by Lal Shankar, produced a strong performance in the closely contested Iruttukuthi A-Grade final to edge past Thuruthithara, representing Kavanar City Boat Club. The two boats remained locked in a thrilling contest throughout the race, with Muthuthayikkan eventually securing the title by approximately one second.

The victory brought the prestigious Sree Narayana Ever-Rolling Trophy back to the Kumarakom Boat Club and added another memorable chapter to the destination's long association with Kerala's traditional boat-racing culture.

Thrilling competition at Kottathodu

The Sree Narayana Jayanthi boat race is one of Kumarakom's most important annual water festivals. The competition is conducted at Kottathodu on a 900-metre course, with Iruttukuthi boats receiving particular prominence. The event traditionally attracts hundreds of skilled rowers and large crowds of spectators.

This year's event featured a colourful water procession before the competitive races. Boats carrying the image of Sree Narayana Guru and the idol of Lord Subrahmanya travelled from the Sreekumaramangalam Temple ghat towards Kottathodu, continuing a tradition associated with the Guru's historic visit to Kumarakom.

According to Kerala Tourism, the annual race commemorates Sree Narayana Guru's visit to Kumarakom in 1903, when he arrived from Alappuzha by boat accompanied by a large procession. During the visit, he established the Sree Kumaramangalam Temple. The boat race developed into a competitive event in 1952 and has since become an important part of Kumarakom's cultural calendar.

Kumarakom's boat-racing tradition continues

The Sree Narayana Jayanthi Boat Race is distinctive among Kerala's famous vallamkali events because of its strong connection with the cultural and spiritual history of Kumarakom. While chundan vallams participate in several major races across Kerala, the Iruttukuthi has a particularly important place in the Kumarakom event.

The victory of Muthuthayikkan has once again highlighted the competitive strength of Kumarakom's boat clubs and the continuing popularity of vallamkali among residents and visitors.

With its combination of traditional boat racing, colourful processions, music, cultural performances and the scenic backwaters of Kumarakom, the Sree Narayana Jayanthi Water Festival remains an important cultural attraction in Kerala's tourism calendar.
