KUMARAKOM, August 27, 2026: The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary at Kavanattinkara is moving towards a major transformation, with its ongoing renovation under the Central Tourism Ministry’s Swadesh Darshan 2.0 programme expected to be completed next month. The project, being implemented at an estimated cost of ₹13.5 crore, is aimed at improving visitor facilities while strengthening the sanctuary as an important eco-tourism attraction in Kumarakom.

Union Tourism Minister Suresh Gopi visited the sanctuary on August 20 to review the progress of the renovation and examine the facilities being developed for tourists. Officials from the tourism department and the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) briefed him on the ongoing works and the infrastructure planned as part of the project.

During the visit, the Minister suggested several additional measures aimed at enhancing the sanctuary's ecological character. These included developing a dedicated fruit garden, planting more trees including poovarasu, and introducing a system to monitor oxygen levels within the sanctuary. He also stressed the importance of increasing tree cover and protecting the proposed fruit garden.

The Swadesh Darshan 2.0 master plan identifies the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary as a key eco-tourism product and proposes improvements to several aspects of the visitor experience. Planned interventions include upgrading pedestrian pathways, creating a better pedestrian loop, improving benches and viewing facilities, upgrading the boat jetty, and modernising information boards and the interpretation centre.

The master plan notes that improvements to watchtowers and observation decks could provide visitors with better opportunities to view migratory birds and other wildlife. Better pedestrian facilities and resting areas are also intended to make it easier for visitors to explore the sanctuary.

Spread across about 14 acres on the banks of Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is one of the region's prominent nature attractions. The sanctuary supports a variety of resident and migratory birds and forms an important part of Kumarakom's nature-tourism offering. The Kottayam district administration also identifies birdwatching cruises on Vembanad Lake as an important way to experience the sanctuary and its surrounding wetland ecosystem. 

The ongoing upgrade is therefore expected to add a new dimension to Kumarakom's tourism appeal by combining improved visitor infrastructure with greater emphasis on biodiversity and responsible tourism. With the renovation approaching completion, the upgraded sanctuary could become an even more important attraction for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts and travellers looking for eco-tourism experiences in Kerala.
