A birdwatching and wetland awareness programme near the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary brought together 45 students for an educational experience focused on the region’s rich birdlife and the importance of conserving fragile wetland ecosystems.
The programme offered students an opportunity to observe birds in their natural surroundings and learn about the diversity of resident and migratory species found around Kumarakom. The region, situated along the Vembanad Lake ecosystem, is known for its wetlands, waterways and habitats that support a wide variety of bird species.
An important feature of the initiative was the introduction of the CROW app, a digital platform used for recording bird observations. By familiarising students with digital bird documentation, the programme encouraged them to participate in citizen-led biodiversity monitoring and contribute to a better understanding of local wildlife.
Activities such as these can help young people develop a stronger appreciation for nature and understand the role wetlands play in supporting biodiversity. Wetland habitats are important not only for birds but also for aquatic life and the ecological balance of the surrounding landscape.
Kumarakom’s birdwatching opportunities and natural habitats make it an important destination for nature education and responsible tourism. Initiatives that connect students with the environment can help build awareness about the need to protect these ecosystems for future generations.
The programme highlights how local educational activities can combine outdoor learning, technology and conservation awareness while strengthening Kumarakom’s reputation as a destination for birdwatching and nature-based experiences.
