Thiruvananthapuram/Kochi: Kerala is preparing for a new phase of tourism development with the state government outlining a series of projects aimed at strengthening the state’s position as a major global tourism destination.

The proposed initiatives focus on improving connectivity, expanding water-based tourism, developing new tourism experiences and creating stronger links between Kerala's tourism, healthcare, knowledge and cultural sectors.

One of the major proposals is Mission Samudra, an ambitious initiative aimed at strengthening Kerala's waterways and cruise tourism by connecting ports, rivers and backwaters. The project is also expected to encourage greater use of waterways for freight movement, potentially helping reduce pressure on the state's busy roads.

Greater Focus on Cruise and Waterway Tourism

Kerala's extensive network of backwaters, rivers and coastal destinations provides considerable potential for expanding water-based tourism.

The proposed Mission Samudra could create new opportunities for tourism products connecting Kerala's coastal centres with its famous backwater destinations. Such connectivity could also support the development of new cruise, leisure and experiential tourism itineraries.

The Tourism Department recently highlighted the concept of "Be a Malayali for a Day", reflecting the state's growing emphasis on experiential tourism rather than conventional sightseeing alone.

This approach can provide visitors with opportunities to experience Kerala's village life, traditional food, performing arts, festivals, handicrafts and local activities while creating additional income opportunities for communities.

Tourism Growth with a Wider Economic Vision

The latest proposals place tourism within a broader development vision that includes healthcare, education, culture and knowledge-based industries.

The proposed Knowledge Valley initiative and plans related to healthcare and education are intended to complement Kerala's tourism strengths. A "Retire in Kerala" concept has also been highlighted as part of the wider vision, potentially opening opportunities for long-stay visitors and wellness-oriented tourism.

Kerala Tourism Enters a New Phase

Kerala has already recorded strong tourism growth in recent years. The Kerala Tourism Department's latest statistics portal now provides the official 2025 tourist statistics, reflecting the state's continued focus on monitoring and expanding visitor arrivals.

The state's tourism industry is also preparing for the Kerala Travel Mart 2026, scheduled to be held in Kochi from September 24 to 27. The event will bring together international and domestic buyers, tourism companies, travel professionals and media, providing another major platform for promoting Kerala in the global travel market.

With new waterway and cruise initiatives, stronger aviation ambitions, experiential tourism and international trade promotion, Kerala is looking beyond traditional tourism products to build a more diversified tourism economy.

A New Tourism Vision for Kerala

The latest plans indicate that Kerala's tourism strategy is gradually moving towards better connectivity, longer visitor stays, community participation and new tourism experiences.

For destinations ranging from Munnar and Wayanad to Kumarakom, Kovalam, Varkala, Thekkady and Bekal, improved connectivity and new tourism products could create opportunities to attract visitors throughout the year rather than concentrating tourism around traditional peak seasons.
